October 26, 2009 - Kimo's, San Francisco We played a great show at Kimo's with Jonathan Mann and the Rock Cookie Bottoms and a band from Phoenix called The Constellation Branch. Jonathan Mann was a 6-piece that were simply amazing! Sort of a vaudville, demented circus music but with pop sensibilities and clever lyrics about hobbits, unicorns, video games... you get the picture. In one song, they incorporated the legend of zelda theme song as a guitar solo. They were all truly great musicians, and had a ton of crazy instruments that you rarely see in a rock show (except a Leilujh show, of course). Accordions, trumpets, glockenspiels, played along with rock guitars and drums and it didn't sound gimmicky at all. These guys are super fun. The Constellation Branch is a heavier sort of rock band from Phoenix. Alot of their songs are in 3/4 time--it was a trip to listen to a waltz being played with distorted guitars at 180 bpm. The singer looks like a 70's porn star and has the energy of...probably a 70's porn star. One that jumps around alot and screams and can sing like Chris Martin of Coldplay. All in all pretty damn good for Monday night in Nob Hill! leilujh@gmail.com
